The Question is:
I have just installed the OpenVMS 7.1-H2 Y2K updates. At the same time I
also installed the latest firmware update 5.4.
On two of my workstations (Alpha workstation 3700) on rebooting I get the a
problem with the system disk
"System Disk is Offline, Mount Verification in Progress"
Sometimes the system gets to the stage of being a member of the cluster, but
thats about it these nodes just will not boot.
I have no problems booting from a CD and then mounting the system disk. I
have also ran numerous times TEST at the >>> prompt which comes back with no
errors
Engineers seem to think its hardware I have my doubts
Any advice?
Thanks
The Answer is :
The OpenVMS Wizard will assume the release in use here is OpenVMS Alpha
V7.1-1H2. If so, the OpenVMS Wizard would strongly recommend using the
V7.1-2 release, and not an OpenVMS release intended for specific then-new
systems and then-new hardware configurations.
First, ensure you have the appropriate Alpha firmware loaded.
Then ensure that the system hardware is functioning correctly. This
will particularly include the (unspecified) hard disk and the SCSI bus
involved. Ensure the SCSI bus is fully operational, is as far under the
maximum bus length as you can possibly manage, is correctly terminated,
and is operating with unique addresses for all storage widgets and for
the host adapter(s) present.
Check for any error log entries using DIAGNOSE.
Acquire any mandatory ECO kits for the particular OpenVMS Alpha release
in use -- though as stated, V7.1-1H2 should be upgraded to V7.1-2 or to
V7.2-1, and ECO kits for these releases applied.
Without information on the specific hardware involved (including the
entire contents of the SCSI bus), the cluster configurations settings,
the use of multi-host SCSI, the presence and location of any quorum
disk, and similar. Without this level of detail, it is quite difficult
to determine if this is a hardware or a software problem.
The OpenVMS Wizard would recommend contacting the Compaq Customer Support
Center for assistance with this problem.
